4-Week PTE Core Study Plan to Reach CLB 9

A focused, structured plan used by CLB 9+ achievers. Each week builds on the last โ€” from understanding the test format to full mock-test conditions. Designed for candidates who can study 1โ€“2 hours per day.

๐Ÿ“Š What CLB 9 Actually Requires

Speaking โ‰ฅ59 ยท Writing โ‰ฅ58 ยท Reading โ‰ฅ58 ยท Listening โ‰ฅ60. Each skill is assessed independently โ€” your lowest skill sets your overall CLB. A perfect Speaking score cannot compensate for a weak Listening score.

Before You Start: Baseline Yourself

Before following this plan, take a timed diagnostic session or use the CLB Calculator with estimated scores. Knowing your starting point tells you where to put extra focus.

Keep a simple spreadsheet. After every practice session, log your CLB score per task. Trend lines matter more than single scores.

Week 1
Format Mastery + Speaking Foundation
Goal: Understand every task type. Build fluency and dictation accuracy habits.
Mon
Speaking Read Aloud ร— 10. Focus on rhythm and pacing โ€” speak at a steady, confident pace. Record yourself on phone and replay once.
Tue
Speaking Repeat Sentence ร— 15. Use Band9PTE's AI scoring. Aim for 70%+ word match on each attempt. Short sentences first.
Wed
Listening Write from Dictation ร— 10. Don't just write โ€” practise spelling high-frequency academic words separately after each session.
Thu
Writing Read and study 3 high-scoring Write Email examples from our guide. Identify the greeting / purpose / action request / close structure.
Fri
Reading Reorder Paragraphs ร— 5. Strategy first: find the "topic sentence" (no pronoun references, introduces the subject). That is always first.
Sat
Speaking Listening Mixed sprint: RA ร— 8 + RS ร— 10 + WFD ร— 8. Track all scores. Log CLB achieved for each task type.
Sun
๐Ÿ” Review week results. Identify your single weakest task type. Plan to double its practice in Week 2. Rest โ€” don't study.
Week 2
Writing + Reading Deep Dive
Goal: Write Email with full correct structure. Master Fill in Blanks strategy.
Mon
Writing Write Email ร— 2 using Band9PTE prompts with a 9-minute timer. Checklist: Did you address all 3 bullet points? Correct formality level? Proper close?
Tue
Writing Summarize Written Text ร— 3. One sentence: 5โ€“75 words. Cover the main idea PLUS one key supporting detail. No bullet points.
Wed
Reading R&W Fill in Blanks ร— 8. After each gap, re-read the full sentence. If it sounds unnatural, swap to another option. Check collocations.
Thu
Reading Reading Fill in Blanks (drag-drop) ร— 8. Look at the words immediately before and after the gap โ€” what part of speech fits? Noun? Verb? Adjective?
Fri
Listening Summarize Spoken Text ร— 3. Note 6โ€“8 keywords while listening. Write immediately after. Check: 50โ€“70 words? One paragraph? No lists?
Sat
Writing Reading Timed session: 2 emails + 1 SWT + 5 ROP + 6 RWFIB. Treat this exactly like exam conditions.
Sun
Review all writing attempts. Fix grammar errors and task-completion gaps. Don't over-study โ€” 45 minutes maximum review, then rest.
Week 3
Speed + Accuracy Drills
Goal: Hit CLB 9 benchmarks consistently. Remove "off days" through repetition.
Mon
Speaking Respond to a Situation ร— 5 + Answer Short Question ร— 10. For RTS: cover all 3 bullet points in order. For ASQ: one direct answer, no filler words.
Tue
Listening Highlight Incorrect Words ร— 5 + Highlight Correct Summary ร— 3 + Select Missing Word ร— 5. Pure listening focus โ€” no distractions.
Wed
Reading MCQ Reading ร— 10 (mix single and multiple). Read the question first, then scan for the answer. Eliminate clearly wrong options before choosing.
Thu
Speaking Read Aloud sprint ร— 15. Target: speak for 95%+ of available time. Zero pauses longer than 0.5 seconds. Record and self-mark pronunciation.
Fri
Listening Write from Dictation ร— 20. This is the single highest-weighted Listening task. Perfect spelling. Every correct word earns points independently.
Sat
Full timed session โ€” all Speaking tasks (5 types) + all Listening tasks (8 types). No pausing. No audio replays. Exam conditions.
Sun
Score review. For any task still below CLB 9 benchmark, do a 30-minute targeted drill. Check if your weak task has improved since Week 1.
Week 4
Mock Tests + Mental Readiness
Goal: Simulate exam conditions daily. Build confidence and consistency under pressure.
Mon
Full mock โ€” Speaking + Writing sections under timed conditions. Sit at a desk, no phone. Record CLB per skill.
Tue
Full mock โ€” Reading + Listening under timed conditions. Headphones in. No music before. Simulate the test centre environment.
Wed
Targeted drilling based on Monday/Tuesday mock results. Focus only on any task still below CLB 9 threshold. 60 minutes max.
Thu
Complete full 2-hour mock in one sitting โ€” in order: Speaking โ†’ Writing โ†’ Reading โ†’ Listening. Calculate overall CLB. Are all 4 skills โ‰ฅ CLB 9?
Fri
Light review only. 30 min Read Aloud warm-up + 10 WFD. Do not over-study the day before. Trust your preparation.
Sat
Logistics day: prepare ID, confirm test centre address, plan your route. Eat well. Sleep by 10 pm.
Sun
๐ŸŽฏ TEST DAY. Arrive 30 minutes early. Breathe slowly. Use the preparation time at the computer before the test starts. You're ready.

Daily Time Commitment

This plan works on 1โ€“2 hours per day, 6 days per week. Here's how to split a typical 90-minute study day:

The #1 Mistake Test-Takers Make

โš ๏ธ Don't Practise What You're Already Good At

If you love Read Aloud and hate Write from Dictation, your WFD score will cap your CLB level โ€” no matter how perfect your RA score is. CLB 9 requires all four skills above the threshold simultaneously.

โœ… The Formula That Works

Spend 60% of your daily study time on your two weakest task types. Rotate every week based on score trends โ€” not how you "feel" about a task.
