What is CLB and Why Does it Matter?
CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is Canada's national standard for measuring English proficiency. IRCC uses CLB levels — not raw test scores — to evaluate immigration applicants. PTE Core scores map directly to CLB levels on a per-skill basis.
Your overall CLB is determined by your lowest individual skill score. If you score CLB 10 in Speaking but CLB 6 in Reading, your overall CLB is 6. This is why a balanced score across all four skills is critical.

Minimum requirement: CLB 7 in all four skills
- Speaking: 43+, Writing: 41+, Reading: 40+, Listening: 34+
- Higher CLB = more CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) points
- CLB 9 in all skills adds up to 136 extra CRS points for single applicants

- NOC TEER 2/3 jobs: CLB 5 in all skills

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
Each province sets its own language requirements. Most PNPs require CLB 6–8. Alberta, BC, and Ontario typically require CLB 7 for their skilled worker streams. Always check your specific PNP stream requirements.
Canadian Citizenship
Note: PTE Core is not accepted for citizenship applications. If you also need a language test for citizenship, you'll need CELPIP or IELTS General Training as well.
CRS Points for Language Scores
Your PTE Core CLB level translates directly into CRS points in your Express Entry profile. Here's how much your language score can be worth:
| CLB Level (all 4 skills) | CRS Points (Single) | CRS Points (With Spouse) |
|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 128 | 124 |
| CLB 9 | 116 | 112 |
| CLB 8 | 88 | 84 |
| CLB 7 | 68 | 64 |
| CLB 6 | N/A (ineligible FSW) | N/A |
The difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 in all skills is 48 CRS points — enough to make or break your invitation to apply in a competitive draw round.
How to Improve Your PTE Core Score
The most effective way to improve is targeted, scored practice. Here's what works:
- Speaking: Practice Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence daily — these are the highest-weighted tasks. Use our free Speaking practice with AI scoring.
- Writing: Learn the Write Email structure — a specific format that AI markers reward consistently.
- Reading: Reorder Paragraphs and R&W Fill in Blanks are the hardest. Practice with time pressure.
- Listening: Write from Dictation carries the most weight. Practice your spelling — every word counts.
