Multiple Choice, Single Answer is one of the seven PTE Core Listening tasks, listed by Pearson at 1–2 questions per test. You hear a 30–60 second recording, answer one question about it, and pick a single option. It scores into Listening only.
There is no partial credit: 1 point for the correct response, 0 for an incorrect one. Nothing is deducted, so an unanswered question is the only guaranteed zero.
Pearson's wording is that you "need to listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question", and that "there are several possible response options but only one is correct". The audio plays automatically and you hear it once.
Pearson also states that "the main part of the question tells you what to listen for" — a main idea, a supporting detail, an inference or the speaker's purpose. Skim the stem and options in the five seconds before the audio starts.
The hardest distractor describes something genuinely in the recording but does not answer the question asked.
The first question in this tool is a new-employee orientation from Sarah in HR: "According to the orientation, what must employees do to work remotely?"
A. Get immediate manager verbal approval — the recording does say approval "depends on your role and manager's discretion", so it feels true. It fails: the rule requires a request through the online portal two weeks ahead.
B. Submit a request two weeks ahead online — matches the recording: "submit a formal request through the online portal at least two weeks in advance." Correct.
C. Work only from nine to five daily — eliminated. Nine AM to three PM Eastern is when you must be available online, not the length of the working day.
D. Attend weekly in-person meetings — eliminated on one word: the meetings are monthly, usually the first Friday.
A and D are really in the recording, but neither answers what an employee must do to work remotely. The answer is B.
